WAIRARAPA WILDERNESS TROUT FISHING

Need a week off to relax, unwind and recharge the batteries – try 24 Hours in the Tararua Ranges just north of Wellington wilderness fishing with Wildside Walks.

‘Wildside Walks’ recently gained a variation to their Department of Conservation Concession to fly people into the ranges to experience NZ wilderness trout fishing at its best; something that has not been legitimately possible before now, making this one of the last areas in the NZ back country to become accessible this way.

Unless it is raining, these ‘dydimo free’ rivers run gin clear with every new piece of water a ‘sight fishing’ possibility. The rivers are well stocked with good populations of resident Brown trout in superb condition. Most pools hold a big fish with the fast water holding the smaller ones trying to avoid being their next meal.

Trips can range from an afternoon to several days dependent on your time and therapy requirement but try to go at least overnight if you can says Orme – the costs are about the same and you will leave with memories that will forever elude you if you do not stop long enough to have a brew by the fire. Take time to watch as the stars come out and share some conversation or silence that really matters with a friend or on your own.

Wildside have access to huts through out the Forest Park but recommend fly camping in areas otherwise unvisited using hammocks that to date have given everyone who has slept in them a good nights rest.

Wildside promise to give an “Intimate NZ outdoor experience and memory you’ll never forget” and pride themselves in being able to design and deliver a trip that will redefine your expectations and remind you of what really matters. Be prepared to ‘rough it’ but as one client recently said as he lent back in a folding chair by the fire, night cap port in hand, after a 90 minute drive with his cell phone attached to his ear from Wellington only hours before stepping out of the helicopter. “This ‘roughing it’ is relative really”.

MORE INFORMATION:

Wildside walks is based and operates out of Masterton in the Wairarapa  in the southern North Island just 90 minutes north of Wellington – NZ’s Capital city.

Wildside can arrange picks ups, additional accommodation and supply gear for the bush if required.

Guiding services are available all year round but Wilderness Trout Fishing in the Tararua Forest Park is only available from 1st October until 30th April each year.

As the fishing is in mountain streams and gorges, all trips are weather dependent and good footwear is essential – everything else they can supply.

NZ Fish and Game, the Department of Conservation and Wildside appreciate what a precious resource the Tararua wilderness fishing is. We operate a ‘catch and release’ policy but will allow up to one fish per party – best cooked over to coals of a hot fire.
