Wairarapa Wilderness Trout Fishing
Need a week off to relax, unwind and recharge the batteries ?
Try 24 Hours in the Tararua Ranges just north of Wellington
Fishing in the Wairarapa is great all year round. The coastal settlements of Ngawi, Lake Ferry and Castlepoint are top spots - and the Ruamahanga River is one of the best places in New Zealand to catch a trout.
‘Wildside Walks’ recently gained a variation to their Department of Conservation Concession to fly people into the ranges to experience NZ wilderness trout fishing at its best; something that has not been legitimately possible before now, making this one of the last areas in the NZ back country to become accessible this way.
Unless it is raining, these ‘dydimo free’ rivers run gin clear with every new piece of water a ‘sight fishing’ possibility. The rivers are well stocked with good populations of resident Brown trout in superb condition. Most pools hold a big fish with the fast water holding the smaller ones trying to avoid being their next meal.
